Promoting Stronger Maritime Security Systems and Policies
Eliminating threats to our ocean from illegal and destructive activities, i.e., IUU fishing, human trafficking, and marine pollution, is among IOJI’s concerns. By providing regular maritime security detection and analysis for maritime law enforcement as well as legal analysis for the improvement of the maritime security system, IOJI aims to support the Indonesian Government to achieve a stronger maritime security system.

Promoting Sustainable and Equitable Blue Carbon Policies
Indonesia harbors a significant area of mangrove and seagrass globally, where Indonesia is estimated to store approximately 20% of blue carbon. To protect blue carbon ecosystems and improve the livelihood of blue carbon dependent people, Indonesia needs to build strong legal and policy frameworks, effective monitoring and enforcement, and meaningful community engagement.

Protecting the Human Rights of Fishers at Sea
The global fishing industry has long been plagued by human rights abuses, where Indonesian fishers, both domestic and migrant fishers, endure perilous work environments, labor exploitation, and limited access to essential services. Conflicting jurisdiction between international human rights law and the law of the sea exacerbates the human rights gaps in Indonesian laws and policy. Protecting fishers at sea, then, necessitates policy and legal reforms at international, regional, and national levels.

This era has propelled Earth into a planetary crisis, surpassing critical boundaries. Therefore, it is important to have a new concept of law that can better address the increasingly urgent planetary crisis ahead, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and chemical pollution (novel entities).
