Despite the great potential of Blue Carbon Ecosystems (EKB) to address climate change and improve the well-being of coastal communities, the health of EKB has long been threatened by anthropogenic pressures. Therefore, effective EKB protection measures are needed.
This study examines six elements of EKB governance, which need to be developed and strengthened in Indonesia: (1) national legal and policy framework; (2) institutional arrangements; (3) community participation and empowerment; (4) tenure security; (5) supervision and law enforcement; and (6) fair funding and distribution of benefits.
This study was launched jointly with the Minister of Environment and Forestry, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Head of the Peat and Mangrove Restoration Agency, and Deputy Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment on January 30 2023 at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Jakarta.
